NAYLAND CINEMA: ‘Can You Ever Forgive Me’   2019-08-30 18:15 2019-08-30 22:30 Europe/London NAYLAND CINEMA: ‘Can You Ever Forgive Me’ ‘Can You Ever Forgive Me’ (2018) is an American biographical film based on the confessional memoir of the same name by Lee Israel. Lee Israel (Melissa McCarthy) made her living in the 1970s and 80s profiling the likes of Katharine Hepburn, Estee Lauder and journalist Dorothy Kilgallen. When Lee is no longer able to get published because she has fallen out of step with current tastes, and her agent is unable to secure her an advance for a new book, she is forced to sell her possessions to cover expenses, including a personal letter she received from Katharine Hepburn to local book dealer. Still desperate for money, she soon hatches a scheme to forge letters by other famous writers and sell them to bookstores and collectors. As dealers become suspicious she re-starts an old friendship with Jack Hock (Richard E. Grant), an openly gay drug dealer, to help her continue her self-destructive cycle of trickery and deceit. The story follows her attempts to revitalize her failing writing career by forging letters from deceased authors and playwrights. The frustrated, hard-drinking author turns her art form to deception, abetted by her loyal friend Jack, but does crime pay…. Starts 7.30pm, doors open 7pm at Nayland Village Hall CO6 4JH. Entry is £5 with 16 years and under £2. Every fifth film will be free. Tea/coffee and biscuits are by donation with a charge for other refreshments and bar.
