Nayland Cinema: ‘The Keeper’   2019-07-26 19:00 2019-07-26 10:30 Europe/London Nayland Cinema: ‘The Keeper’ The Keeper (2018) is a British-German biographical drama film which tells the extraordinary love story between a young English woman and a German PoW, who together overcome prejudice, public hostility, and personal tragedy. While visiting a PoW camp near Manchester at the end of WWII, Margaret Friar (Freya Mavor), the daughter of the manager of the local football team, notices young German paratrooper Bert Trautmann (David Kross). Her father is so taken by Bert's prowess as a goal-keeper that he gets him out of the camp to play for his local team. Margaret and Bert's love blossoms despite local hostility and resentment of the German PoWs. Bert's heroics in goal are noticed by Manchester's City Football Club. Rather than going back to Germany like nearly all the other camp inmates, Bert marries Margaret and signs for Manchester City. His signing causes outrage to thousands of fans, many of them Jewish. But Margaret wins support from an unexpected direction: the influential Rabbi Altmann who publishes an open letter opposing the campaign against Bert. Bert's path to acceptance begins and peaks at the 1956 FA Cup Final when he secures victory for Manchester City despite a collision with another player which shatters a vertebra in his neck and almost costs him his life. Starts 7.30pm, doors open 7pm at Nayland Village Hall CO6 4JH. Entry is £5 with 16 years and under £2. Every fifth film will be free. Tea/coffee and biscuits are by donation with a charge for other refreshments and bar. Nayland VHMC karenfreeman@suffolkonline.net
